I like David Brooks op-ed piece in the NY Times today. I think he has it exactly right, that we make up all these stories about the "last days" or about our better natures or about political implications to obscure the fact that nature is unpredictable and uncontrollable and ultimately fatal.

I particularly like this sentence from Brooks' op-ed piece:
" . . . when Thoreau goes on to celebrate the savage wildness of nature, he sounds, this week, like a boy who has seen a war movie and thinks he has experienced the glory of combat."
